In a world surrounded by design and communication, the challenge is to stand out amongst the crowd. How do I grab a viewer’s attention and interest them enough to bring in for a closer look?  How can I get them to open my marketing piece buried in their stack of mail? My approach involves unique concepts, mixed or unusual materials, three dimensional aspects, or a crazy idea I might come up with to start a conversation.
Graphic Design is a tool for communication, and simplicity is my key element. Exploring new techniques and material possibilities pushes the boundaries of my creations. I am influenced by Bauhaus designs, abstract art, and, more recently, installation art. The dimension and escape of reality within installation art grabs my attention and has led me to experiment with meshing the two worlds of two and three dimensions. I am interested in crossing the flat surface of my graphic design pieces with a three-dimensional aspect. Graphic design focuses on the single sense of sight – we look and we interpret what we see. What interests me, is to include additional materials or aspects to my work to evoke other senses such as; touch, smell, taste, or hearing.
Color, imagery, emotions, and the world around me inspires my work. I start with a list of words that include feelings, color, and imagery. I then work backwards from what I want the audience to feel from my artwork and explore ways in which to accomplish that goal. I develop a concept, consider material options, and then create my piece, all with the goal of communicating to the viewer in mind.
